3rd BIOTRAILS Project Workshop in Ucayali, Peru
On October 9, 2026, the third workshop of the BIOTRAILS project was held as part of the second working session of the Regional BioTrade Commission. The event took place at the auditorium of the Manish Hotel in Pucallpa and included the participation of representatives from the Regional Government of Ucayali, the private sector, academia, research centers, and civil society.
The meeting was opened by Nilton Quispe Alvino, Deputy Manager of Policies, Monitoring and Evaluation of the Regional Economic Development Office of the Regional Government of Ucayali, who emphasised the importance of continuing the implementation process of the Regional BioTrade Strategy for the conservation and sustainable use of the region’s biodiversity. The importance of the cacao and chocolate value chain was also highlighted.
Yovita Ivanova, Senior Manager at the Bioversity International & CIAT Alliance, presented the findings from the first two BIOTRAILS project workshops. Afterwards, Raffaele Giordano, BIOTRAILS’s project coordinator, virtually presented the development process of the Participatory System Dynamics Model (PSDM). This model explains the link between biodiversity, climate, and society (BSC) and simulates the impacts of different policy interventions and scenarios. It was used during the participatory exercise to define the most suitable strategy to reduce the impacts of cacao production on biodiversity.
In addition, during the workshop, progress was presented on the National Strategy for the Promotion of BioTrade, with a view to strengthening institutional cooperation partnerships around integrated land management, environmental sustainability, and local productive development.
