This week, over 8,000 Indigenous people from more than 200 ethnic groups gathered in Brasília for the 21st edition of Acampamento Terra Livre (ATL), Brazil’s largest Indigenous assembly. Held annually since 2004, ATL is a powerful space for mobilisation, cultural celebration, and political advocacy, defending the constitutional rights, territories, and traditions of Brazil’s Indigenous Peoples.

BIOTRAILS proudly participated in ATL 2025, standing in solidarity with the movement’s calls for land demarcation, biodiversity protection, and the recognition of Indigenous knowledge systems.

One of the most vibrant aspects of ATL 2025 was the celebration of Indigenous art and cultural expression. Once prohibited, the sale of handicrafts and traditional artwork is now a celebrated feature of the event, showcasing the creativity, heritage, and identity of Indigenous communities through clothing, crafts, and performances.

Empowering Forest Stewards

Indigenous Women in Focus: As part of our engagement, BIOTRAILS hosted a breakfast dialogue with Indigenous women leaders, focusing on their dual roles as guardians of the forest and creators of cultural knowledge. The session explored the barriers they face in marketing their art, and the need for continued support in fostering economic resilience and environmental leadership.

ATL 2025 was a powerful reminder of Indigenous peoples’ resilience, wisdom, and leadership. BIOTRAILS remains committed to supporting nature-positive pathways rooted in justice, equity, and local knowledge.
