Final Stakeholders’ Workshop Marks a Milestone in BIOTRAILS Gold Mining Case Study

On October 22nd, the BIOTRAILS project successfully held the third and final stakeholders’ workshop for the Gold Mining value chain case study, bringing together a diverse and enthusiastic group of participants from across sectors and regions.
The workshop was a vibrant, collaborative space marked by high levels of engagement and active participation from stakeholders representing miners, civil society, NGOs, academia, and policy-making bodies. Their contributions helped shape a rich dialogue around the challenges and opportunities for sustainability in gold mining.
A key highlight of the event was the presentation of BIOTRAILS results, including the main findings from the case study, a set of policy recommendations, and the unveiling of a visualisation tool designed to support evidence-based decision-making. These outputs reflect months of research and stakeholder engagement and aim to inform more inclusive and sustainable policy pathways.
Participants also took part in a hands-on participatory exercise using the BIOTRAILS Policy Simulator. This interactive tool facilitated meaningful dialogue among stakeholders, allowing them to explore different policy scenarios and their potential impacts on biodiversity, livelihoods, and governance. The exercise fostered mutual understanding and co-creation of ideas, reinforcing the value of transdisciplinary approaches in policy development.
Importantly, the BIOTRAILS process has had a significant impact on capacity building, empowering stakeholders, practitioners and researchers with new tools, knowledge, and collaborative practices to engage more effectively in sustainability transitions and policy design.
The workshop concluded with a shared sense of achievement and momentum, as stakeholders expressed appreciation for the collaborative process and the practical tools developed through BIOTRAILS.
