Innovative Ideas Shine at Landscape2024 Conference
The Landscape2024 conference, held from September 17-19 in Berlin, brought together over 300 experts from 38 countries to explore transformative visions and technologies in agroecosystems. Organised by the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF), with the support of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the event focused on the theme “Agroecosystems in Transformation: Visions, Technologies, and Actors.”
The conference provided a platform to explore innovative solutions to balance food production, biodiversity preservation, climate adaptation, and rural development. Sessions covered many topics addressing the complex challenges facing global agriculture today.
A key highlight for BIOTRAILS was the presentation by Johannes Stahl from adelphi during Session 1.2, which focused on “Knowledge interchange and landscape transformation in a decolonial perspective: vulnerable communities under multiple risks in the contemporary Global South.” Stahl presented the BIOTRAILS project, examining the impact of cocoa, gold, and handicrafts value chains on agricultural landscapes, biodiversity, and social equity in Peru, Ghana, and Brazil. Using the “leverage points” framework, Stahl contrasted the negative environmental and social impacts of cocoa and gold with the positive effects of handicrafts on forest conservation and community empowerment.
The session attracted a diverse audience eager to engage with ideas addressing current environmental challenges. The conference also featured keynote speeches from leading scholars and fostered valuable networking opportunities. Workshops, master classes, and field excursions allowed participants to delve deeper into practical applications of innovative agricultural practices, such as crop diversification and digital technologies.
Landscape2024 highlighted the importance of collaboration in shaping the future of agricultural landscapes, inspiring attendees to apply these innovative concepts in their work.
