Introducing the BIOTRAILS ESG Biodiversity Toolkit: A New Resource for Sustainable Business Reporting

BIOTRAILS is happy to announce the launch of the ESG Biodiversity Toolkit, decision-support tool designed to help companies assess, manage, and improve their performance related to biodiversity within the broader framework of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies.
Developed by our partner DRAXIS Environmental, in collaboration with Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH), the toolkit is tailored for with significant biodiversity impacts or dependencies on ecosystem services, such as cocoa production, fisheries and aquaculture, and gold extraction.
- The toolkit helps companies in complying with the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD 2022/2464/EU), which now requires disclosure of biodiversity-related impacts across the entire value chain. It enables companies to identify, assess, mitigate, and report their biodiversity impacts in line with the latest EU regulatory requirements.
What makes the ESG Biodiversity Toolkit unique?
- Built on the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and aligned with the sector-specific indicators issued by the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD)
- Covers critical impact drivers like Climate change, Land use change, Pollution, Resource exploitation and Biodiversity loss
- Goes beyond guidance: it performs calculations and provides quantitative impact results, reducing the reporting burden.
The Toolkit adopts the 5-step approach of the Science-Based Targets Network (SBTN), guiding businesses through:
- Assessment of their biodiversity footprint,
- Prioritise key issues,
- Target setting and disclosure
- Implement mitigation actions, and
- Tracking progress toward nature-positive goals.
The ESG Biodiversity Toolkit is part of BIOTRAILS’ broader mission to support transformative change in high-impact value chains and to equip stakeholders with tools that promote biodiversity conservation and sustainability.
