Transdisciplinary Pathways for Addressing the Biodiversity-Climate-Society Nexus: Insights from BIOTRAILS and Collaborative Opportunities
The Biodiversity-Climate-Society nexus is a web of interconnected challenges that demand integrative and transformative solutions. From biodiversity loss to climate adaptation and socio-economic shifts, addressing these issues requires moving beyond isolated interventions toward systemic, cross-disciplinary approaches.
At the upcoming Alternet Conference 2025, our session Transdisciplinary Pathways for Addressing the Biodiversity-Climate-Society Nexus will explore how collaborative research and participatory governance can drive meaningful change.
BIOTRAILS provides a compelling example of how transdisciplinary research can be applied in real-world contexts. The project examines four key value chains—cocoa, gold, cultural handicrafts, and fisheries/aquaculture—across Peru, Ghana, Brazil, and Greece.
By using participatory modelling, the initiative brings together diverse stakeholders—including policymakers, NGOs, private sector representatives, and Indigenous communities—to map out feedback loops and identify leverage points for transformation. Through this systems-thinking approach, BIOTRAILS aims to highlight the connections between environmental sustainability, economic development, and local governance, ensuring that biodiversity conservation and climate adaptation strategies are inclusive, effective, and scalable.
This session will cover a range of critical topics, including:
- Transdisciplinary approaches to biodiversity and ecosystem management
- Complexity and feedback loops within socio-ecological systems
- Participatory modelling and co-design in decision-making
- Policy frameworks for adaptive governance
- Cross-sectoral collaboration for biodiversity and climate resilience
In addition, the session seeks to facilitate a rich dialogue on how a systems-thinking perspective can address the cascading effects of biodiversity loss, climate change, and socio-economic challenges.
