Transformative Change for Biodiversity: New IPBES Report Reveals Key Challenges and Opportunities
Published in December 2024, the IPBES Transformative Change Assessment Report highlights the urgent need for transformative change in society’s relationship with nature. Developed by over 100 experts from 42 countries, it identifies inequality, environmental disconnection and short-term priorities as key drivers of biodiversity loss.
The key challenges to transformative change highlighted in the report include:
- Colonial legacies and economic and political concentration;
- Weak policies and ineffective institutions;
- Unsustainable production and consumption habits, including individual practices;
- Limited access to clean technologies and fragmented knowledge and innovation systems.
To face these challenges, four guiding principles for Transformative Change are outlined:
- Equity and justice – ensuring the fair distribution of benefits and responsibilities;
- Pluralism and inclusion – embracing diverse perspectives and knowledge;
- Reciprocal relationships with nature – recognising human-environment interdependence;
- Adaptive learning and action – evolving practices based on new insights.
To reverse biodiversity loss, five key strategies have been identified:
- Conserve and restore biocultural landscapes;
- Integrate biodiversity into high-impact sectors;
- Transform economic systems to integrate environmental issues into financial decisions;
- Reform governance for inclusivity, accountability, and adaptability;
- Promote environmental education and knowledge co-creation to drive new social values and behaviours.
Implementing these strategies can preserve biodiversity as well as – referring to estimations – generate over US$10 trillion in business opportunity value, while supporting the creation of 395 million jobs by 2030 (IPBES 2024, p. 11). The report reinforces the urgency of multi-stakeholder and multi-level action, as well as the feasibility of change towards a fair and sustainable future.
