Ucayali Reaffirms Commitment to Regional BioTrade Strategy with BIOTRAILS Support
As part of the Institutional Cooperation Agreement signed between the Regional Government of Ucayali and the Alliance Bioversity International & International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), a working meeting was held on Tuesday, July 22, under the leadership of the Regional Office for Economic Development. The meeting brought together representatives of the Regional BioTrade Management Commission, the entity responsible for coordinating, implementing, and monitoring the Regional Strategy.
Daniel Dancourt Velásquez, Regional Manager of Economic Development, emphasised and reaffirmed the commitment of the Regional Government of Ucayali to resume joint actions for implementing the Regional BioTrade Strategy.
He highlighted its importance in promoting the sustainable use of biodiversity, driving local economic development, and conserving the environment. He also expressed his appreciation for the support of the Alliance Bioversity & CIAT in helping to identify, at this stage, the priority areas to be implemented in the short and medium term.
Yovita Ivanova, Senior Manager at Bioversity International & CIAT, highlighted the presence of representatives from member institutions and organisations of the Regional Management Commission, as well as officials from the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), represented by Otto Galindo, Specialist from the Directorate of Economic Studies, and from the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM), represented by Jaime Delgado from the General Directorate of Biological Diversity. These officials presented the roadmap toward a circular economy. They discussed the opportunities and challenges for bio-businesses in Ucayali, while also expressing their commitment to support the alignment of the Regional Strategy’s action lines with national guidelines.
Shallinny Ramírez, Coordinator of the Terra Nuova Consortium—an NGO that supported the strategy development phase—gave a presentation on the Regional BioTrade Strategy from a cooperation perspective. She highlighted the interest and determination of the current Manager of Economic Development, Daniel Dancourt, to continue with the implementation phase and to convene the relevant stakeholders to reach agreements that would enable progress and fulfilment of the strategy’s objectives.
The session also served to explore new possibilities for collaboration within the framework of the BIOTRAILS project, aiming to strengthen institutional cooperation around integrated land management, environmental sustainability, and local productive development.
Following the presentations, a space for dialogue and exchange of proposals was created, where key milestones achieved up to 2024 were presented. After discussions and feedback from the Commission members, several important agreements were made, including updating the Commission’s member directory. The Regional Office for Economic Development, acting as the Commission Secretariat, will request the ratification and/or update of the members of the body. This will pave the way for the next session to address proposals such as elevating the request to implement the Agroecological Regional BioTrade Strategy as a Regional Public Policy, forming working groups aligned with the strategy’s action lines, and beginning the identification and prioritisation of short- and medium-term objectives.
